German Auto Race Features Cars with Speakers Blasting Wagner
»A New Dimension to Road Rage?«
A car rally to the thundering tones of Wagnerian opera got under way Thursday in the heart of Germany's industrial Ruhr region.
The race [www.wagnerrallye.de/] features 10 two-man teams who must drive through 10 cities in the region blaring out operas by the legendary German composer Richard Wagner via loudspeakers fitted on their vehicles.
They must also complete a number of tasks related to Wagner and the Ruhr.
The stunt, which is promoting an arts festival, was thought up by Christoph Schlingensief, who is regarded as an agent-provocateur of German theatre.
He will be directing a new production of Wagner's final opera, Parsifal, at this year's Bayreuth Festival in summer.
Schlingensief said he wanted the rally "to liberate opera from elitism and take it onto the streets." The winners will receive tickets for Parsifal.
